The KFG Interdisciplinary Workshop continues on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025 with a session led by Sevanna Poghosyan (Tartu) & Oliver William Rowe (Tartu) on "Self-Determination and Sovereignty."
The Interdisciplinary Workshop will take place in room K302 of the School of History, Schellingstr. 12, 80799 Munich.
Sevanna Poghosyan earned her PhD in Law from the University of Tartu, School of Law, Estonia, in October 2024. Her dissertation explored Soviet and contemporary Russian approaches to democracy in international law. She has delivered various lectures and seminars on the subject. She holds Master's degrees in "International Law and Human Rights" and "European Union-Russia Studies" from the University of Tartu, as well as an MA in "Iranian Studies" from Yerevan State University, Armenia.
Her research interests focus on authoritarian interpretations of international law and human rights, as well as the politics of international law, with a specific focus on Russia and the post-Soviet space. She has published in various journals and handbooks, such as The Oxford Handbook of International Law in Europe, the Baltic Yearbook of International Law, the Polish Yearbook of International Law.
Oliver Rowe is a Junior Research Fellow and PhD Candidate in Political Science at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies of the University of Tartu, Estonia. His doctoral dissertation, to be submitted in the autumn of 2025, is entitled "Self-determination in Theory and Practice: The Reconfiguration of the 'Russian' Empire, 1914-1924". His wider academic interests include the intellectual history of self-determination, authority, and states; Russian history between 1861 and 1928; constitutions and constitutionalism; and ideas of emancipation in theory and practice. Oliver's most recent published works (on self-determination during the Russian Revolution and Civil War) can be found in the journals The Russian Review and Revolutionary Russia.
