Research Project

Market Under Heaven: Chinese Conceptions of Markets and Market Economy in a Comparative Perspective

This project explores both historical and contemporary ideas about markets in China. A central concept is viewing markets as a fundamental element of statecraft and the common good. The research addresses both economic theories and political perspectives, with an emphasis on recent developments during the Xi Jinping era. These ideas are placed in an international context to investigate the potential for changes in economic policy approaches worldwide, particularly in developing economies. Special attention is given to how Russia perceives the Chinese model. Currently, many Chinese contributions to economic thought explicitly challenge what is regarded as US-dominated "mainstream economics." This raises the question: Is there potential for a non-Western economic framework to emerge from these discussions?
