Research Project

Czech urban administration between late-socialist reforms and Europeanisation (1985–2004)

The project explores the dimensions of particularism and universalism in urban decision-making, representation, planning and economy. It asks to what extent the National Committees system in socialist Czechoslovakia permitted autonomous or particularistic policies, and conversely, to what extent the Europeanisation trends manifested themselves at the urban level during the 1989–1990 revolutions and the subsequent decade of political and economic transformation. It draws on earlier research into local governments in Prague and Český Krumlov, as well as their interactions with and divergence from national institutions.
